Systems Administrator:
We have a candidate that is going to hit his two year mark
Trying to use CA Unified Infrastructure Management
Looking for someone who already has experience with the CA UIM tool
In addition to Solaris and Linux administration skills
Patch systems, manage boot environments
Looking for them to be comfortable with bash/shell scripting
If they have experience with puppet, we use that to manage our system environment
Type of UIM Experience:
Looking for someone who has worked with the product
Install probes
Adjust alert thresholds
Understands what the product does
Someone who can hit the ground running
Integrated UIM into ServiceNow is a REAL plus, that’s coming up on their roadmap
UIM:
It’s already installed but not all probes are out there and installed
We’re still pushing those out and adjusting how the alerting is done
Solaris:
Someone comfortable with Unix administrator
It’s 50/50 from his standpoint of Solaris/Unix (preferred) and UIM
If they have AIX or Linux administration and have worked with UIM, we can work with that.
Years of Experience:
Couple of years of experience with UIM
Unix administration somewhere around the 3 to 5 range
Not someone who is an absolute expert but is comfortable working with those things
Can’t train someone
Senior Candidates:
If they are within the rate, we’re open to that
Team Make-up:
Current team of 13 people with the mixed skillset
We have to support spectrum and UIM
We support multiple Unix and Unix like systems
Solaris, RedHat Linux 5,6, & 7, haven’t released 8 yet
Manage configuration with Puppet
Someone familiar with coding in puppet would be nice
Background with something like an AutoSys
Most systems are virtual now
Still have to manage multipathing, scripts, and the like with physical systems
Centrify
NFS
Report:
Going to report to a different gentleman but the dotted line to me
Interview Process:
Phone à 2nd round video à Offer
Remote:
Yes
Location:
Owings Mills, MD once the offices open back up
Open to relocation
Cloud Experience:
Don’t have to have it but if you do that’s nice to have
We’re responsible for on-prem but there is a big push to go to the cloud so it could be helpful
Systems Engineer Overview:
Two other gentlemen who are retiring but offer support to a WebSphere infrastructure
They have architected disaster recovery process and day to day support for the infrastructure
Run WebSphere on AIX
Important that people coming in have significant AIX and virtual IO servers
Dealing with VIO redundant servers
Manage HMC’s to manage the equipment that’s there
Also supporting an older application platform that is supposed to be decommissioned
AS400 is another skill set that we’d like to pick up to provide support for that
Significant waiting on AIX and VIO to be able to keep those systems up to date with patching
Would need to be able to cover early morning hours
We do a lot of maintenance before 8 am
Typically, around 4 am
Net new updates into their stage area off-hours
Flexibility being able to work differing hours
Supporting on-call so being able to work outside of normal east coast hours
Industry Preference:
Don’t have a preference as long as they have the skillset and mentality
Doing due diligence, testing, having backups before modifications are made
Prioritizing:
No priority
Hoping to have them all filled ASAP
They’re all leaving around the end of the year/first of the year
Interview Process:
Same as the Systems Administrator
Furloughed:
We don’t shut down at the end of the year
We don’t furlough anyone
We have a change freeze
Responsibilities:
Both do a tremendous job, they’re equally experienced
Just broke it up from a rate perspective
Looking for highly skilled people
Don’t need both to be equal skill sets
The skill sets that we’ve listed are what we're looking for
Team:
Same team as the Systems Administrator
On-Call:
There is a rotation and they would be responsible for coverage
It works out to one or two weeknights and one weekend every two months or so
A lot of the work that needs to get done will be off-hours
Certifications:
Don’t think our current folks have any certs
Not necessarily a requirement but it would be nice to have
AS400:
Honestly, we’re just trying to keep the lights on with that thing until it goes away in Q2
It’s largely self-maintained right now
Just looking for basic system administration of AS400
General tuning and debugging
Localize drives with mirroring, understanding that
Basic knowledge of that type of activity
If we can get the resources soon enough, we can have the two who are retiring as part of the interview process
Technical Skill Requirements:
We run a lot of production code on our WebSphere platform
Very confident in AIX and VIO environments
Being able to patch and keep those environments up and running
AIX:
If they are an AIX wiz, I’d be willing to look at them if they didn’t have any AS400 experience
Can’t have two of those though
Platform:
IBM P Series
AS400 is I Series
Hardware:
Experience is important for the support of AIX and AS400
We do work with vendors that’ll come into the office and fix things
We generally don’t have our people in the data center
So, they’re not physically touching it but being able to understand what the problem is before they escalate
Presenting Candidates:
AIX candidates go to the Lead Engineer
UIM candidates go to the Administrator
Lead Role:
Would like to see the person in the Lead role take responsibility for the platform
A lot of what’s out there is in good shape but we’re losing the resources that take care of the day-to-day
Would have a little bit more seniority and management of the infrastructure and have the Senior person supporting them
Duration:
We have not committed to a temp to hire scenario
Right now, it’s set up as a 6-month contract
This skill set will be needed for more than 6 months but I can’t commit to anything further than 6 months
