JOB DETAIL

Job Description

We are rebuilding Detroit’s public schools. We educate and empower every student, in every community, every day, to build a stronger Detroit. Help us achieve our vision. We are looking for talented individuals who are passionate about transforming the District and making a significant difference in the lives of public school students, parents, principals, teachers, and central office employees.

As a member of the Data Services team, the business analyst will play a key role in ensuring the team’s development efforts meet the needs of the end users. The business analyst will meet with various departments to investigate and learn, ask questions and create protocols to unearth business needs, and then coordinate with the team to meet delivery dates, according to scope. This is a unique opportunity to influence the direction of data usage and decision-making within an urban school district representing 50,000 students and 7000 staff. This position is expected to report in-person to the DPSCD office in the Fisher Building (3011 W Grand Blvd, Detroit).

We are seeking someone with the following background:
•More than four (4) years of experience working as a business analyst, preferably with experience in education or data management
•Basic SQL and data modeling proficiency a plus
•Experience using Azure DevOps (or similar tools)
•Experience using Microsoft Visio or other diagramming tools for explaining relationships and process flows
•Ability to think conceptually using strong analytical skills, successfully distill complex technical information into clear business language, and implement solutions to address business problems
•Proven ability to effectively project manage multiple initiatives against established milestones and deliverables
•Comfort working in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment

Responsibilities include the following:
•Interact with stakeholder subject matter experts using exemplary customer service, presentation, oral and written communication skills to continually align the District’s data infrastructure and reporting platforms to meet new requirements
•Lead requirement gathering and relationship management with local stakeholders – specifically bridging relationships between technical and non-technical project members (principals, teachers, support staff, administrators, district teams, etc.)
•Analyze and decompose relevant business processes into understandable documentation that can be consumed by end users as well as by technical team members
•Prepare the technical requirements specifications and define the success criteria for solution testing
•Support team members in design thinking process to develop extensible and scalable solutions that are centered around the needs of the end user
•Manage and support the proper adoption and usage of DevOps within technical team members
•Ensure that proposed test solutions cover all aspects of delivered business specification and support with planning and execution of unit, integration, and acceptance testing
•Provide assistance to solution delivery on implementation and training
•Demonstrate an effective approach to team-building including clarity of purpose and shared responsibility; value, solicit, and integrate team members’ different perspectives effectively

Engagements with other departments will be the bulk of the work for this position. This may include the following key projects:
•Liaising with the Technology Division to ensure dashboarding needs are met or have a plan for completion/delivery
•Liaising with the Office of School Health & Wellness to improve COVID reporting workflows and data infrastructure
•Developing a data governance roadmap through partnerships with HR, Enrollment, Finance, and other central office departments
•Gathering business requirements around the sustainable development of a student, staff, and family portal
