JOB DETAIL

  • Work with US value streams helping to ensure Hiscox Cloud infrastructure is properly managed, secure and cost effective.
  • Performance of traditional SRE functions with the goal of automating all things infrastructure – ensuring it is wholly scripted and deployed as part of an automated DevOps CI/CD pipeline with little or no human interaction – making good use of existing tools like Azure DevOps, Puppet, Docker, and Terraform. Must know how to edit YAML and strong familiarity with Linux / Oracle.
  • Ensuring our production and dev/test environments are secure, performant, scalable, consistent (through scripting) and monitored accordingly – so we can take proactive steps towards improving all these aspects over time and are fully aware of existing issues.
  • Ensuring our cloud environments are secure and safe – setting up and making sure Private and Public subnets are appropriately and cost effectively secured.
  • Supporting squad engineers with the design and architecture of the overall solution – ensuring infrastructure is a key part of the overall consideration.
  • Actively participating in incident management, problem resolution and root cause analysis scenarios.
  • On a day-to-day basis, working alongside engineers – pairing and collaborating as necessary. Working in an Agile manner and within sprints – focused on specific cloud solutions.
  • Helping engineers to also grow their knowledge of SRE techniques – especially around Container and Terraform usage / state management – allowing them to self-serve as much as possible.
  • Working closely with the other US/ITS Infrastructure & DevOps members to agree on best practices around how we use our cloud subscriptions – ensuring resources are properly tagged, conventionally named, and monitored for performance, security and cost.
  • Knowledge sharing and collaborating with the wider Hiscox SRE and Cloud Infrastructure team members – to share failures, successes and best practices.
  • Ensuring we tear down PoC/Spike resources when no longer required to keep on top of spend. Regularly looking at the cost explorer for this purpose – ensuring engineers do the same.
  • Ensuring we have a pathway to multi-cloud tenancy – with a view to always securely use the best cloud provider for the solution. Hiscox US is expanding our use of Azure and keep up to date with this fast-moving tech space.
